Growth during the program
I
am a lecturer, which does not have to remain in the same area of teaching as a
general lecturer. Since I work for the Police Training system, I have to be a
teacher in different subject areas such as law, practical police work, parade, self-defense,
sports, lifesaving, swimming, driving, positive thinking, disaster management, and
information technology. In addition to that, I am a lecturer in English for the
different types of trainees/students, including different ages, ranks, and
experiences.
With
that background, I wanted to update my knowledge of English language skills, to
update the knowledge as well as sharpen with the latest versions of social media and other trends to fill the gaps and sophistication for perfection in the language with a postgraduate qualification.
Since,
I have another two Master's degrees from University in Colombo and also a Bachelor’s
degree from the Open University of Sri Lanka, with the guidance of my good friend
I selected the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Practice in English to
join.
Since
that first day, I have observed an advanced program in versatile subjects
which are curious to study and also gave me the motivation and enthusiasm to
follow the program.
One
of the best things that happened was that on the first day, I was appointed as the
batch representative to support the administration and fellow students at
the same time. I was happy to accept it for two reasons, first, I get an
opportunity to help others and the other was the responsibility that made me be in all classes for the fulfillment of the assignment given.
The
lecturers had diversity in all aspects, which made the program interesting.
The selected subjects are also fruitful and covered the English language and
other related subject areas. For example; negotiation skills, and writing
project proposals. Specifically, with the subject of technology-mediated communication and other related social media technological knowledge and experience
were crucial for updating with the modern world. As an example, I had not
created a LinkedIn account, assuming it is a similar network to Facebook, but
realized the usefulness of the LinkedIn network. Accordingly, the diverse areas
of updated subjects with capable resource persons made the program for me a
fruitful investment.
Unfortunately,
even though the program was mostly conducted online, the activities, group
discussions, demonstrations, and all practical works made it interesting and made me confident in the use of language accurately. In general, the English language is taught
by a single lecture in schools and other institutions, but the PGIE gave the
opportunity to have professionals in the field to deliver the relevant subjects
was a great prospect for me to get the accurate idea and application of the
language.
I
am generally an enthusiastic person, not only for studies but also for every activity
in life. Hence, I am confident to say that my expectations for the course are more than expected. Because I tried to follow the guidelines of the lecturers.
Since I had my primary education, in Abakolawewa Vidyalaya and Ambanpola Central
College, we have had a sense of great respect for teachers, which is a blessing
always as I strongly believe. It is not a matter of the age or other status of
the teacher to give the full respect unconditionally as I learned and
practiced.
If
I get a chance to recommend this program to anyone I do it with maximum
ratings. Finally, the knowledge and experience gained from the program will be
very much useful for me as an academic as well as for my profession which I am
expecting to join the United Nations. Not only that but also the qualification
as the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Practice in English.
